Are you ready to study football production? - The Ministry of Broadcasting #72

Hi Reader,

I won’t be available from next Friday June 14th on and until mid-July.

2 of the biggest football tournaments will kick off almost at the same time and I will be busy watching all games.

The UEFA Euro will take place in Germany, and the Conmebol Copa America will happen in the USA.

To me, this is one of the best times for learning. It is like an intensive football production course.

These 2 massive competitions will not only feature some of the stars on the field but also in the broadcasting side as well.

For instance, many of the directors that will be in charge of the games in Europe and in America are among the top 10 in the world and have recently led FIFA World Cup events.

In Germany, Laurent Lachand will lead the pack. This talented French and his team will go all the way to the Final in the European competition.

Along with him, we will get games directed by others in my top 10 like Jamie Oakford, Knut Fleischmann, Oscar Lago, François Lanaud, and Sebastian von Freyberg.

In the United States, the expectations are also high. Grant Philipps, the talented Scottish director, will take the lead and will deliver the opening game, and the Final of the Conmebol Copa America.

We will also get to see games directed by the experienced Juan Figueroa from Spain, Dani Melguer from the Netherlands, and Daniel Teridovicius and Alberto Garcia from Argentina.

While I cannot mention all the colleagues that will be working in audio, replays, vision mixing, or other areas in these 2 tournaments, they deserve a recognition because they make productions like these ones happen.

And precisely because this competitions gather some of the best talent in the world of football production is that I already have my list of areas that I will be analyzing in the upcoming 4 weeks:

  1. Storytelling: I want study how these production teams cover the stories around the games. How they show the protagonist, the fans of the 2 playing teams, or the coaches.
  2. Use of replays: This aspect is key in football. There is not much time to show different angles of a play, so the ones that make it on air must be top notch. I want to pay special attention to the angle selection, the length of the clips, the timing.
  3. Graphics: Everything from the design and use of the score bug, the application of data, and most importantly, the functionality and aesthetics of the replay move.
  4. Camera work: I want to pay extra attention to the different camera positions (height, framing, speed), and also to the ability of the camera operators to provide those emotional shots that go beyond the minimum.
  5. Innovation: What are the elements or angles that represent a difference for the audience and how the directors use them just enough to showcase the novelty but without missing important moments of the game.

Maybe, you are not as obsessed with football production as I am, but if you want to learn or improve your skills, I recommend to you to pay attention to these upcoming tournaments and create a basic list of the elements that you want to see.

All the best to my colleagues in UEFA and Conmebol with the delivery of these massive productions.

We will be watching and supporting.

It takes 2.5 minutes to read. Hi Reader, “Hi Oscar: Would you have interest in this production guide from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, happy to send it to you”. This message was the beginning for one of the nicest experiences I’ve had since I started writing on LinkedIn. It came from Stuart Katz, a talented veteran of our industry who reach out with this invaluable offer. Of course, I said yes right away. I was curious to put my hands in this guide from one of the most memorable events in...

Read by those who collect accreditations and don't know what to do with them. Hi Reader, Just a few years ago, talking about drones in professional broadcasting operations was not accepted. There were many concerns about safety, reliability, quality, and even the age of the operators. However, when you see clips like the following, you understand that a drone shot is now crucial to make your shows look better. This clip is from Paul Short, a drone pilot out of New Zealand who is based now in...

Read by those who cannot find the wifi information in the truck. Finding a job as a freelancer in broadcasting is an attention game. You need to let others know that you are available, but most important you need to be better at promoting yourself than hundreds that are looking for the same gig. I found a great example with the coolest freelancer right now. Check the video below. Again, your personality might not be Pete's and that is okay. Just make sure that you find other ways to promote...
