The best gift for a broadcasting geek- The Ministry of Broadcasting #70

Hi Reader,

“Hi Oscar: Would you have interest in this production guide from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, happy to send it to you”.

This message was the beginning for one of the nicest experiences I’ve had since I started writing on LinkedIn.

It came from Stuart Katz, a talented veteran of our industry who reach out with this invaluable offer.

Of course, I said yes right away. I was curious to put my hands in this guide from one of the most memorable events in sports.

Stuart was kind enough to think about me when he wanted to share this guide but also to ship it from New Jersey to my house in Florida.

I waited for the package with excitement, and after a couple of days, it arrived safe and sound.

I opened the envelope just to discover the booklet, the one that broadcasters of the 1996 Games received with all the information about the host feeds.

It is in perfect condition and includes camera plans, production personnel names, IBC information, and even a message from Manolo Romero.

Romero, who passed away in 2022, became a legend of our industry. He was a pioneer in the creation of the host broadcast model and the coverage of a complex even like the Olympics.

“From the IBC, AOB (Atlanta Olympic Broadcasting) will generate the International Signal for a cumulative audience of35 billion viewers watching worldwide” wrote Romero.

If you are familiar with the Olympic Games, these were the years before Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS), the organization that is now in charge of delivering the production of the Summer, Winter, and Youth Games.

I cannot thank Stuart enough for sharing this book with me and still, he went even further.

He shared with me a sample of the detailed diary he was writing every couple of days during the Games. Stuart was an assistant director for wrestling and live through the good and the very bad that the 1996 edition offered.

His writing is priceless and I really appreciate that he allowed me to share it with you here.

I will always be thankful to Stuart and I hope that I can honor his example in the future.

Furthermore, if you want to learn more about the complex world of video productions for healthcare organizations, Stuart and his company Elm City Communications are a great reference.

Before this week, I felt very close to him because we share the same birthday (March 25), and now even more because he not only passed me a book but an invaluable memory and learnings.

It takes 2.5 minutes to read. Hi Reader, I won’t be available from next Friday June 14th on and until mid-July. 2 of the biggest football tournaments will kick off almost at the same time and I will be busy watching all games. The UEFA Euro will take place in Germany, and the Conmebol Copa America will happen in the USA. To me, this is one of the best times for learning. It is like an intensive football production course. These 2 massive competitions will not only feature some of the stars on...

Read by those who collect accreditations and don't know what to do with them. Hi Reader, Just a few years ago, talking about drones in professional broadcasting operations was not accepted. There were many concerns about safety, reliability, quality, and even the age of the operators. However, when you see clips like the following, you understand that a drone shot is now crucial to make your shows look better. This clip is from Paul Short, a drone pilot out of New Zealand who is based now in...

Read by those who cannot find the wifi information in the truck. Finding a job as a freelancer in broadcasting is an attention game. You need to let others know that you are available, but most important you need to be better at promoting yourself than hundreds that are looking for the same gig. I found a great example with the coolest freelancer right now. Check the video below. Again, your personality might not be Pete's and that is okay. Just make sure that you find other ways to promote...
