What Every Producer Must Learn In Our Industry- The Ministry of Broadcasting #67

“That’s not part of our job—let’s leave that to the engineers or operations team.”

That was the response I received from a fellow producer during a meeting about the details of an upcoming show. The topic was transmission, and my colleague abruptly dismissed me when I attempted to delve into it.

The moment was frustrating, not just because of the interruption, but because it underscored a prevailing mindset: that producers should stay clear of the technicalities of transmission, and vice versa.

Right after the meeting, an engineer named Manuel who had witnessed the exchange pulled me aside and said, “Listen, no matter what you were told, I appreciate your eagerness to understand how things work. Let me know what you want to learn, and I’ll share what I can.”

I thanked him at that moment, and I continue to be grateful every day.

One of the greatest mistakes we make as production professionals is thinking we don’t need to engage with the technical aspects of our work. This creates a barrier between us and the engineers, giving them the impression we aren’t interested in their processes.

Many avoid this engagement for three main reasons:

1. Fear.

2. Laziness.

3. Ignorance.

However, I want to offer five compelling reasons why you should dive into the technical side early in your career:

1. Gain a Competitive Edge: You’ll stand out among your peers.

2. Communicate More Effectively: You’ll be able to articulate your ideas and plans with greater clarity.

3. Enhance Problem-Solving Skills: You’ll develop a keen understanding of troubleshooting.

4. Broaden Your Career Opportunities: You’ll open doors to more job and promotion possibilities.

5. Build a Versatile Skill Set: This can be invaluable if you ever decide to start your own business.

In short, enhancing your technical knowledge not only makes you a more attractive job candidate but also a more proficient professional. An extra skill can be a significant advantage, and you never know where life will take you.

Keep and open mind and a learning attitude even if it is for skills that “you are not being paid for”.

3 sports productions I am watching this week:

To lighten the mood, here’s a glimpse of what I’m watching this week:

  1. The UEFA Champions League Semifinals: If you want to learn more about football soccer production, watch these matches to get the best references of coverage.
  2. The Formula 1 in Miami: A must see considering that is my hometown’s circuit and this is massive remote production.
  3. The John McEnroe documentary: Not a new one, but if you like tennis and a raw story told by one of the best in history, this is for you. Watch it on Paramount+/Showtime here in the USA.

It takes 2.5 minutes to read. Hi Reader, I won’t be available from next Friday June 14th on and until mid-July. 2 of the biggest football tournaments will kick off almost at the same time and I will be busy watching all games. The UEFA Euro will take place in Germany, and the Conmebol Copa America will happen in the USA. To me, this is one of the best times for learning. It is like an intensive football production course. These 2 massive competitions will not only feature some of the stars on...

It takes 2.5 minutes to read. Hi Reader, “Hi Oscar: Would you have interest in this production guide from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, happy to send it to you”. This message was the beginning for one of the nicest experiences I’ve had since I started writing on LinkedIn. It came from Stuart Katz, a talented veteran of our industry who reach out with this invaluable offer. Of course, I said yes right away. I was curious to put my hands in this guide from one of the most memorable events in...

Read by those who collect accreditations and don't know what to do with them. Hi Reader, Just a few years ago, talking about drones in professional broadcasting operations was not accepted. There were many concerns about safety, reliability, quality, and even the age of the operators. However, when you see clips like the following, you understand that a drone shot is now crucial to make your shows look better. This clip is from Paul Short, a drone pilot out of New Zealand who is based now in...
